From The ACTING Principal
Autumn is a beautiful time of the year. As a Queenslander I haven’t experienced an autumn season like this. The coloured leaves, the cool crisp air and the calmness of the wind all add to lovely days. Leaves teach us that there is beauty at every stage of life. Each human being too is beautiful at every stage, age, condition, or functioning level of life. God cares for each one of us no matter what. 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxieties on him because He cares for you”.
Of course with the cool weather comes sicknesses, colds and flu. Workplaces begin to feel the effects and ours is no different. You may have noticed your children being taught and cared for by casual staff or other members of our team. As you would be aware there is a widespread shortage of casual staff. Some days we have to make alternative arrangements for the day. Please understand that we keep the children at the heart of our decision making and do the best that we can to source appropriate cover for classes when staff are absent.
Students not feeling well
Just a reminder if your child is feeling unwell and displaying cold/flu like symptoms can you please ensure they stay at home until they start to feel better. It is so important that we all do our part in ensuring we keep our school community fit and healthy. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
School Events:
Year 3 Bible presentation Monday 27th March Year 3 students were presented with their bibles by members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. A big thank you to the church for helping with the presentation and purchase of these Bibles.
Luke Kennedy (Wellbeing guest speaker) presented to students in Years 3-6 with very positive feedback. Students were well engaged and heard some valuable lessons and advice on how to keep their interactions positive and care for themselves. Luke also presented to parents at 5:30pm with once again positive feedback.
Mother’s Day breakfast Over 70 mums attended the breakfast with their child/ren. Photos were taken at the photo booth and a cute video recorded for facebook. It was a great school event with very positive feedback. Thanks goes to everyone who made the morning possible.
Athletics Carnival Althletics carnivals are big days that take lots of prior organization. The carnival was a credit to everyone involved. The change of venue, a beautiful day, great organization, mammoth staff team effort and wonderful participation and sportsmanship by the children all made for a wonderful carnival. It was lovely to see parents also helping at the event and parents and grandparents cheering on their children. Big thanks to everyone!
National Simultaneous Storytime Today our students gathered to participate in National Simultaneous Storytime. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in schools around Australia and New Zealand. It is an event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children’s book that explores and addresses key learning areas of the Curriculum. Over 2,000,000 students across the country participated in today’s event.
Please note – Winter Uniform is now in place.

Navigating Screen Time: The Impact on Young Minds
In today’s digital age, the influence of screens on young children is a growing concern. Excessive screen time has been linked to behavioural issues like attention problems and impulsivity, partly due to the overstimulation it causes. Additionally, prolonged screen exposure can interfere with vital developmental milestones such as social skills and emotional regulation, often leading to disrupted sleep patterns and mood swings increasing family conflict.
To address some of these concerns, it is crucial to limit and supervise screen time. Establishing clear boundaries, like designated screen-free times and areas, helps instil healthier habits early on. Parents and caregivers should actively engage with children during screen time, fostering discussions about digital literacy and online safety. By modelling responsible screen usage and providing alternative activities that encourage creativity and physical activity, caregivers can promote a more balanced lifestyle.
Prioritizing offline activities such as outdoor play and hands-on exploration is essential for holistic development. By diversifying experiences and encouraging real-world interactions, children gain valuable skills that cannot be acquired through passive screen consumption alone. Through these efforts, parents and caregivers can ensure that children thrive in the digital age while safeguarding their overall well-being.

Values Focus
We continued our exploration of the parables of Jesus in Chapel this week, listening to the parable of the sower from Luke 8. As we read the parable we wondered if we think of ourselves as the seed, the sower or the soil? How does our reading of the story change when we change characters? This week I read it considering the seeds as the message of God’s love, and the words that came to me again and again were “when we are ready to hear about God’s love, the seeds of love grow deep inside us and God rejoices and keeps on planting…”
For conversation at home: How is God’s message of love in each of you? What do you need to keep it growing?
Parables are a great way to begin to read the bible together, you could spend a year reading them together, re-writing them, wondering about their meanings and reading stories that have been inspired by them.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge is now open and Lutheran School Wagga Wagga is excited to be participating!
What is the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge?
The PRC is a state-wide challenge that encourages students to develop a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students and enables them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition, but a challenge to encourage each student to read, to read more, and to read more widely.
All students who complete the challenge and have their reading record validated by the school’s PRC coordinator will receive a certificate signed by the Premier of NSW.
How many books do students need to read?
Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 are challenged to read or experience 30 books. 20 of these books must be from the relevant Challenge booklists, and up to 10 books can be personal choice books. Books can be read with a parent, carer, teacher or another student.
Students in Year 3 to Year 6 are challenged to read 20 books. At least 10 of these books must be from the relevant Challenge booklists, and up to 10 books can be personal choice books.
If a book is from an approved PRC series, students can enter up to 5 books as Challenge books and can read up to 10 other books from the same series as Personal Choice books. More information on the rules of the Challenge can be found at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html.
Books must be added to a student’s online reading record by Friday 23 August 2024 in order for their reading record to be validated and receive a certificate.
How do students log their reading?
Students can access the PRC’s Student Experience site using their PRC username and password. All login information has now been sent home.
