MISSION STATEMENT

To work under God in partnership with parents to provide an inclusive, nurturing and high quality education for every student.

VIsion

Flourishing through faith, belonging and the pursuit of excellence.

From The Principal

Community involvement is important and there have been many events as of late that have helped contribute and build our community. They fit beautifully with our Value this term, of SERVICE.

Many hands make light work and as the Bible says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus is the ultimate example of a servant in God’s kingdom. Everything He did while He lived set an example for us even still today. Jesus healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ministered to the weakest, most marginalized members of society. Jesus came to pour out His life in service; consequently, we ought to give our lives in service to Him and others.

Below are some examples of community involvement and service that have either happened or still to happen this term:

ANZAC Day
Firstly, the ANZAC Day celebrations were a wonderful opportunity to show our respect to the many brave men and women who served others. We had 44 students attend the ANZAC march with our school captains laying a wreath during the service. On the first day of school this term we were fortunate to have Corporal Michael Tatton join us and speak to our school about service.

Service Learning
This term, every fortnight our Year 3 cohort will be spending some time at Caloola Court Aged Care Centre. Small groups of ten students will walk down Red Hill Rd and spend an hour chatting and participating in activities with the elderly. Engaging students in service learning by visiting the elderly can yield numerous benefits for both the students and the elderly they connect with. Benefits can include; empathy and compassion development, enhanced communication skills, personal growth and perspective. This is an exciting opportunity and we will continue this throughout the year with other Year levels participating. We look forward to sharing our visits with you.

P&F
Our dedicated Parents and Friends Committee cooked up a delicious democracy sausage in bread on Saturday during the recent voting on election day. Thank you to those who volunteered their time to serve our community. We appreciate you!

The Mother’s Day Stall is taking place on Thursday 8th May and is also run by the P&F. A reminder to send either $5 or $10 with your child/ren on Thursday.

The power of a simple act of kindness and service can go a long way.

Building Project
On a different note, we are pleased to announce that the Board has approved a building/refurbishment project of our current Year 5 classrooms. This will include new tiled ceilings, carpets, cabinetry and split system air conditioning. Programmed Maintenance will commence the project at the end of this term to be completed over the July school holidays. The classroom block is definitely in need of some love and we look forward to updating this block and others in the years to come.

School Building Fund

As the days and weeks keep rolling, we find ourselves edging closer to the end of the Financial Year and Tax Return time. I’m not sure how it happens so quickly but before we know it, it will be upon us again. I wanted to remind our families that we have a School Building Fund that at any stage people can donate to. Donations from the Fund are used for construction or maintenance of school buildings. All donations to the Fund are tax deductible and will be issued with a receipt to include in your Tax Return. If you wish to make a donation, please contact our Finance Officer. We appreciate and are grateful for all donations made to the school.

I pray you have a wonderful week and that all Mothers, Grandmothers and those special motherly figures in our lives have a blessed day on Sunday.

Blessings,

Hollie Kinning

Principal

Transition to winter uniform

Due to the unseasonably warm weather the transition to winter uniform will be extended for another week into week 3. From week 4 students should now be wearing their full winter uniform. If there are any more changes then an update will be put out on the Parent Facebook groups for each year level.

Traffic – Drop off and Pick Up
Thank you to those parents who continue to abide by the school routines and traffic signs to ensure that our school drop off and afternoon pick up routines are safe and prompt.

A reminder to all families that the kindy quick drop-off area is strictly for brief stops only and not for parking, both in the mornings and afternoons. When cars are left unattended in this area, it causes congestion and makes it difficult for other families to use the space as intended. If you wish to walk your child to class, please park in a designated parking space or on the street and walk in. Thank you for helping keep our drop-off area safe and efficient for everyone.

A reminder that the main carpark, including the walkway area, is not a quick pick-up zone. Parents are required to park their vehicles, exit, and collect students from the Resource Centre. This area serves as a central bus stop for the local area, and queuing in the carpark severely disrupts the flow of buses within the bus circle. If no parking spaces are available, do not queue—please exit immediately and use street parking. Continued congestion in this area poses safety risks and impacts the entire school community. Your cooperation is essential.

Strums, Songs and Smiles: Year 6 Ukulele Concert for their Kinder Buddies
On Friday 2 May, our Year 6 students shared a special musical gift with their Kindergarten Buddies – they performed to them on their ukuleles.

The concert was the result of many weeks of dedication and practice by the Year 6s, and it showed. As they began strumming the first chords of their ‘whole class’ opening number, our Year 6s had the attention of their little buddies.

A series of small group songs followed which were carefully selected by the Year 6s. After much rehearsing and tweaking of their selected songs last term, each performing student and small group brought their own flair to the stage. But they were not just playing music; the Year 6 students were creating a moment of connection, joy and shared memories for their younger peers.

A big congratulations to our talented Year 6 musicians, and a heartfelt thank you to them for their efforts. A job well done! Thanks to the Kinder and Year 6 staff for facilitating the concert. A special thanks to Chaplain Darren, Ms Davenport and Miss Stewart for their practical assistance, too.

The Ukulele Buddy concert was not only a wonderful showcase of talent, but also a celebration of the special bond between school buddies. It was not just about musical skills of our senior students, but also their leadership, confidence, and the desire to build community.

Visual Arts

This week in Visual Arts, Kindergarten looked at the famous artwork by Henri Matisse called “The Snail”. We also read the story “Round” by Jennifer Ward, which shows all kinds of round things that you can find in the natural world. The students used black marker and paint sticks to create their own snails making sure to draw them large with a distinctive spiral pattern. Kindergarten had a wonderful time creating art and I think that their snails have real character!

Science  and STEM

The year so far has been full of hands-on learning and exciting discoveries in Science and STEM across all year levels. Our Kindergarten students have been busy exploring the world around them, learning to identify and describe different materials in the environment. Years 1 and 2 investigated push and pull forces, including the invisible force of gravity, through fun and interactive experiments that brought science to life.

In Years 3 and 4, students explored the powerful forces that shape the Earth’s surface, such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and erosion, building their understanding of how our planet constantly changes. Meanwhile, Years 5 and 6 delved into the fascinating inner workings of the human body, learning about its systems and the incredible structural and behavioural adaptations that help humans survive and thrive in a variety of environments. It’s been a fantastic start to the year, with curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking shining in each lesson!

Curriculum Matters

SpellMaster
This term will see the return of SpellMaster where we see which students can spell the most outrageous words on the planet! The competition is a fun one and all students from Years 2 to 6 will be competing. Initial rounds will be completed in class over the coming weeks. The grand final will be held on Friday 13th June in the Chapel. Keep an eye out for further information coming soon!

ICAS Assessments
This year Lutheran School will again be participating in the ICAS assessments. Students in Year 2 to Year 6 are eligible to participate in these tests. ICAS will take place in Term 3 and are now available for purchase via the ICAS Parent Portal.

Your school access code is: HZC023
Your parent page link is: https://shop.icasassessments.com/pages/parent-payment/HZC023

Please be aware that all ICAS assessments at Lutheran School will take place before regular school hours. All students participating in these tests will need to be able to arrive at school by 7.50am to begin the assessments by 8.00am.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge is now open and Lutheran School Wagga Wagga is excited to be participating!

What is the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge?

The PRC is a state-wide challenge that encourages students to develop a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students and enables them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition, but a challenge to encourage each student to read, to read more, and to read more widely.

All students who complete the challenge and have their reading record validated by the school’s PRC coordinator will receive a certificate signed by the Premier of NSW.

How many books do students need to read?

Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 are challenged to read or experience 30 books. 20 of these books must be from the relevant Challenge booklists, and up to 10 books can be personal choice books. Books can be read with a parent, carer, teacher or another student.

Students in Year 3 to Year 6 are challenged to read 20 books. At least 10 of these books must be from the relevant Challenge booklists, and up to 10 books can be personal choice books.

If a book is from an approved PRC series, students can enter up to 5 books as Challenge books and can read up to 10 other books from the same series as Personal Choice books. More information on the rules of the Challenge can be found at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html.

How do students log their reading?

Students can access the PRC’s Student Experience site using their PRC username and password. All login information was sent home to all students in last term. Please contact your class teacher if there are any problems logging into the site.

P&F News

P&F had its first meeting for Term 2 on Tuesday, 6 May.

There is a lot coming up through the year that will keep us busy – Mother’s Day stall, our winter fundraiser, Cocktail Party, Tournament of Minds, Father’s Day stall and a mango drive to end out the year. We’re very much in preparation mode and have appreciated the number of volunteers that have already put their hands up to help out.

We also welcomed Katey Mulholland to the P&F executive as Vice Chair. Amanda Cappello has stepped down from that role and her role as representative to the School Board. We are grateful to Amanda for her valuable contributions to those roles over the last years.

Election BBQ
There was a wonderful turnout for the Federal election BBQ and cake stall.
Thank you to all those who helped on the day and to those that contributed baked goods to the stall.

Mother’s Day stall
The ever popular Mother’s Day stall is being held on Thursday this week.
A big thank you to Ketura for organising and to all the other volunteers who are assisting on the day.

Save the Date
This year’s Cocktail Party will be held on Friday, 15 August 2025. More details to come, but pop it in your diary now!

Next meeting
Our next meeting will be held in Week 8. Further details of the meeting will be forwarded closer to the time.
We would love to see as many parents and carers as possible. If you cannot attend in person, please feel free to join in via zoom.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the important women in our children’s lives.

NSWCIS Touch Football Trials

On Wednesday 30 April Eddie Benecke, Tom Bull, Charlie Forsyth and Jordan Tracey travelled to Sydney for the NSWCIS Touch Football trials. There were 80 boys from across the state trying out for 14 positions. Eddie, Tom, Charlie and Jordan participated in a skills session followed by 30-minute games. Our boys performed very well, demonstrating impressive skills, speed and teamwork. Congratulations to Tom, Charlie and Jordan who were one of the 14 boys selected in the NSWCIS Touch Football team. This is the first time three LSWW students have been selected together in any CIS team! The boys will represent CIS and compete at the NSWPSSA Touch Football Championships in Dubbo next term. Thank you to our parents and grandparents for transporting and supporting the boys at this event.

Eddie Benecke – ‘It was lots of fun. I look forward to trying out again next year’.
Tom Bull – ‘I liked meeting new people and playing the games’.
Charlie Forsyth – ‘I enjoyed the drills and games. I am looking forward to representing CIS next term’.
Jordan Tracey – ‘I enjoyed learning new skills and meeting new people’.

RAS Cross Country Carnival

On Tuesday 6 May our Cross Country Team travelled to the Jindera Golf Club for the RAS Cross Country. There were 300 students from 10 local independent schools competing against one another in 2km and 3km events. Our team performed extremely well recording fourteen top 10 placings and impressive times. Congratulations to Rosie Molineux who won the 11 Years Girls 3km event and Harriet Chapman who placed third in the 8/9 Girls 2km event. This is the third consecutive year Rosie has won her age group event.

We wish the students who qualified for the NSWCIS Cross Country Championships in Sydney all the best. Thank you to Mrs Lauren Forsyth, Mrs Felicity Molineux, Mrs Nicole Wadley and our parents and grandparents for assisting with the organisation and transport.
