MISSION STATEMENT

To work under God in partnership with parents to provide an inclusive, nurturing and high quality education for every student.

VIsion

Flourishing through faith, belonging and the pursuit of excellence.

From The Principal

It has been wonderful connecting with people lately and recently I’ve had the opportunity to do this in our school context, with other Lutheran educators across the country and in my personal life.

Two weeks ago my family and I spent the weekend in Tumut with my extended ‘Jarick’ family. 35 Jarick family members spent the weekend connecting and filling out buckets with laughter. On the way home my family explored the Adelong Falls, connecting with nature and the beauty of God’s creation.

One thing that has been a point of conversation is staff and student wellbeing. Wellbeing is a positive state experienced by individuals and communities. It’s a combination of a person’s physical, mental, emotional and social health factors.

Every term we focus on staff wellbeing and attempt to provide opportunities to reflect, share and enjoy each other’s company. We know that life is often challenging and often things happen that can cause our own personal wellbeing to deteriorate, whether it be in our professional (work) context or in our personal lives.

As a staff, connecting around the staff room table over a delicious morning tea is always something that’s enjoyed and welcomed. We decided to host an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea together considering all of us, as a staff included, have known (or been through) cancer battles. We also celebrated wellbeing week with a morning tea, including a coffee from 3 Dutchies coffee van, to say thank you and to take the time to again, connect.

Having a safe and healthy workplace, classroom, home environment is important for wellbeing. How we respond to the growing challenges in these areas can impact how we grow, develop and determine whether we flourish.

It’s a blessing to work at Lutheran School with a group of talented staff and beautiful students. I’m grateful for the opportunity to connect with all groups of people and look forward to doing this more over the weeks and months ahead.

Blessings,

Hollie Kinning

Year 3 visit to Bidgee Strawberries and Cream

On Friday the 30th of May, Year 3 were lucky enough to visit Bidgee Strawberries and Cream (Wagga’s strawberry farm). The visit aligned with their science unit on bees as we had an interesting talk from their beekeeper. He discussed his role, the importance of bees and everything about them. The owner of the farm talked us through the development of the farm over the years and the art to growing the perfect strawberry. We were treated with some strawberry ice cream and got some time to feed their animals. The students took away a wealth of knowledge and represented our school well!

“I loved it. We learnt about the life cycle of a strawberry”. Zoe

‘Amazing. I loved how we got strawberry ice cream and that we got to pick strawberries. They were delicious and super juicy”  Xavier

Term 2 SRC Fundraiser

On Friday the 13th of June the SRC will be holding a Hot Chocolate and Beanie Day for Ronald McDonald House. A $2 donation will allow each student to wear a beanie and receive a drink of Milo at lunchtime (3-6) and at afternoon tea (K-2). The milo will be made on full-cream milk.

In the spirit of sustainability, we encourage you to bring a reusable cup (non-glass, please) to enjoy a hot drink. A limited number of paper cups will also be available.

Students not feeling well
Just a reminder that, if your child is feeling unwell and displaying COVID-/flu-like symptoms, they should stay at home until they are symptom-free. It is so important that we all do our part in ensuring we keep our school community fit and healthy. Thanks for your cooperation with this.

Winter Uniform Reminder

With temperatures dropping quite low over the coming days and weeks, it’s important for students to wear jumpers or jackets to school. Additionally, there are several jumpers and jackets in the lost property area. Students should check for any missing items.

Extra Snacks for Early Bus Students
We’ve noticed that students who arrive early by bus are often hungrier in the mornings, especially during the colder weather. Many are eating their snacks and part of their lunches soon after arriving at school, which can leave them short on food for the rest of the day. We kindly ask parents of early bus travellers to consider packing an extra snack or a slightly larger lunch to help keep them energised and focused throughout the day. Thank you for your support!

School Pick-Up Reminder
We kindly remind all parents and carers that for the safety of our students, children must not be picked up from the main driveway. Please park in the designated carpark and walk over to collect your child. Students should be collected from school by 3:35pm when teachers finish their supervision. Any students who are not collected by that time will be taken to TheirCare for supervision, which will incur a fee.

Reminder: No Dogs on School Grounds
A friendly reminder to all families that dogs are not permitted on school grounds at any time, including during pick-up and drop-off. This is to ensure the safety and comfort of all students, staff, and visitors. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our school environment safe and welcoming for everyone.

NO DOGS PERMITTED ON SCHOOL GROUNDS AT ANY TIME

Stage In The Spotlight

This term in English, Year 5 have been looking into the concept of heroes, villains and anti-heroes within literature. As part of this study, we have been reading the novel ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar. This week we completed a character profile seen in the samples below. The students used AI to help create a picture of the character based on descriptions in the text along with how they imagine the character in their minds.

Year 6 Dive into Real-World Maths with “Dwelling Dilemma”

This term, our Year 6 students have tackled their first major Mathematics assignment of the year — an exciting and thought-provoking challenge titled “Dwelling Dilemma.”

The Challenge:
The scenario centres around the Dwek family, who have just moved to Wagga Wagga and are temporarily living in a four-bedroom home in Tatton. But with changing family needs, they’re now in search of a custom-designed home that can comfortably house:

• Mr and Mrs Dwek
• Teenagers Jedda (16) and Bronte (14)
• Toddler Abby (18 months)
• And the newest family member — Brigette, a disabled dog who needs access to a 10-metre indoor hydrotherapy pool!

Adding complexity to the brief, the family prefers a modern, non-traditional home design — one that steps away from conventional rectangular layouts — all while staying within a strict budget of $800,000.

To meet this challenge, students engaged with a wide range of mathematical skills and concepts:

🔹 Area and Perimeter – to design well-proportioned living spaces
🔹 Additive and Multiplicative Strategies – to manage costs and materials
🔹 Problem Solving and Reasoning – to make smart, practical choices
🔹 Working Mathematically – to explain their strategies and decisions clearly
🔹 Time Management – to plan, prioritise, and deliver their work on schedule

This task has offered students a fantastic opportunity to see how mathematics applies beyond the classroom. From budgeting and designing to justifying their ideas, the project has sparked both creativity and critical thinking.

We are incredibly proud of the imagination, effort, and mathematical reasoning our Year 6 students have brought to this challenge. Their unique and thoughtful designs have shown just how powerful learning can be when it is connected to the real world.

Values Focus

On Friday we continued our focus on Jesus as we heard the parable of the banquet from the Gospel of Luke. Like many of Jesus’ parables, the story he tells imagines the Kingdom of God as a place where those who are left out, the poor, the sick, the disabled, and the socially unacceptable are invited. One of the surprising elements of this parable is that those who people may have expected to be invited to such a party all found something more important to do and miss out on the amazing celebration.

Many of Jesus’ parables remind us that God’s kingdom is a place where the status quo is challenged, where everyone is invited, and all are included. Jesus tells us that the Kingdom of God turns everything inside out and upside down, especially when it comes to who is included in God’s family.

This week, perhaps you could have a conversation as a family, think about people you think might be left out, or groups of people who might be ostracised and what you might be able to do to change that.

Shalom

Darren

Curriculum Matters

Premier’s Reading Challenge
Congratulations to our 6 students who have already completed this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge. Well done Jonah Keyes, Shanvi Garlapati, Leah Jeong, Fareeha Ayeni, Hugh Lindley and Anaya Singla. What a great achievement!

What is the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge?
The PRC is a state-wide challenge that encourages students to develop a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students and enables them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition, but a challenge to encourage each student to read, to read more, and to read more widely.

All students who complete the challenge and have their reading record validated by the school’s PRC coordinator will receive a certificate signed by the Premier of NSW.

How many books do students need to read?
Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 are challenged to read or experience 30 books. 20 of these books must be from the relevant Challenge booklists, and up to 10 books can be personal choice books. Books can be read with a parent, carer, teacher or another student.

Students in Year 3 to Year 6 are challenged to read 20 books. At least 10 of these books must be from the relevant Challenge booklists, and up to 10 books can be personal choice books.

If a book is from an approved PRC series, students can enter up to 5 books as Challenge books and can read up to 10 other books from the same series as Personal Choice books. More information on the rules of the Challenge can be found at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html.

How do students log their reading?
Students can access the PRC’s Student Experience site using their PRC username and password. All login information was sent home to all students in last term. Please contact your class teacher if there are any problems logging into the site.

NSWCIS Netball Championships

On Thursday 29 May the RAS Netball team travelled to Sydney for the NSWCIS Netball Championships. There were 120 girls from Sydney/Regional NSW Independent Primary Schools trying out for 10 positions. Our school was represented by Matilda Mercer. The RAS team had an awesome day, winning 6 of their 9 games, placing 3rd overall.

Matilda played Goal Shooter (GS) for the RAS Team. She demonstrated impressive accuracy, movement and decision-making skills throughout her games. A big thank you to Georgia Tilyard for coaching the RAS team and Matildas parents, Sarah and Brendan for supporting her at this event.

‘I enjoyed playing against teams from Sydney and meeting Swifts GS/GA, Helen Housby’ Matilda Mercer.

LSWW Athletics Carnival

Our annual K-6 Athletics Carnival was held at Jubilee Park on Wednesday 28 May. The day was full of lots of colour, wonderful sportsmanship and fantastic competition. All students are to be congratulated on their participation, enthusiasm and determination in their events. Congratulations to our Age Champions, the students who broke new records and those who competed for the first time.

A big thank you to Bob Hay from the Wagga Wagga Athletics Club for supplying and managing the timing gates and assisting with the entries and results. Thank you also to Martin Peck for assisting with the marquees, Mary Woodbury for supplying our yummy refreshments and the K-6 staff and parent volunteers who assisted with the coordination of the carnival.

The winning house will be announced at this week’s assembly, Friday 6 June at 2:30pm.

Stage 2 and 3 Rugby Teams Represent at ACT & Southern NSW Rugby 10s Finals

On Friday 30th May, Lutheran School Wagga Wagga’s Stage 2 and Stage 3 Rugby Union teams travelled to Canberra to compete in the ACT & Southern NSW Rugby 10s Finals Day. The competition was fierce, with teams from across the region showcasing incredible talent and determination. Despite the tough opposition, our students demonstrated remarkable grit, persistence, and teamwork throughout the day. Their sportsmanship—on and off the field—was a true reflection of the values we hold dear at our school, and we could not be prouder of the way they represented Lutheran School Wagga Wagga.

We would like to sincerely thank the families who made the journey and supported their children by providing transport and encouragement throughout the day. Your involvement makes experiences like these possible. A special shout out goes to Mick Davis, Scott MacGregor, Geoff O’Hare, Pat Barrett, and Tim Sheather for their invaluable support and coaching of the teams—your time, effort and passion helped guide and inspire our players. Congratulations to all involved for a wonderful day of rugby and school spirit!
