Riding The Wave - A Note From The School Counsellor
Last term The Kidman Institute, UTS., offered a one-day “Anxiety”& Trauma” workshop in Wagga for school well-being staff. The Institute has a team of psychologists who are regularly deployed to support schools in regional areas due to the surge in mental health issues in recent years. I was fortunate enough to attend the workshop and found it really useful.
Something I learned is that anxiety is like a wave; it builds up, reaches a peak, and always dies down eventually.
The Worry Wave Diagram below shows how anxiety builds and wanes. For children riding this wave, their body and brain function will change depending on where they are in the wave.
In the green zone (baseline) they are calm and receptive to learning.
The orange zone is marked by increasing anxiety. The brain is less receptive to learning and communication; the body will respond to the anxiety with signals such as fluttering in the stomach, clenching in the chest, tight fists and jaws etc.
In the red zone, the peak of the wave, the rational brain doesn’t work. Children may not be able to think, talk or behave appropriately. The heart may be pounding and the breathing shallow and rapid. They need to ride out the wave in a calm, quiet place. Calming activities such as taking deep, slow breaths, walking, or the pressure of a weighted blanket can help to reduce the anxiety.
As the wave subsides the child again enters the orange zone, then reaches their baseline in the green zone. This is the time to talk about what triggers the anxiety and to come up with strategies for what to do/how to cope next time the anxiety wave hits.
We can help children to manage anxiety by helping them to understand their worry triggers, and to be aware of body signals that anxiety is increasing. Teaching them to ride it out like a wave, and having pre-planned strategies for how to manage the orange and red zones will also help.

Values Focus
This term’s value is “Justice,” it’s a value we’ll be exploring together in Chapel through worship, prayer, story and song. This week we read from the book of Micah, it’s one of the more well-known verses of the bible, it reads:
God has told you, O mortal, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8
In the early days people would offer sacrifices to their Gods, and they believed what and when they sacrificed really mattered, if you didn’t sacrifice to the harvest god in time your harvest could fail, if you failed to sacrifice to the rain god then you’d suffer drought. Many communities believed their gods to be angry, vengeful, demanding, fearful.
Then, we read this from the book of Micah and are surprised to find the God of the Hebrew Scriptures to be one that you could walk with, rather than run or hide from and one who wasn’t demanding sacrifice of crops, livestock or human. This reading really grabs my imagination, how do I imagine God if “all” that is asked of us is to do justice and love mercy, what does this God value, and how does that shape my values?
Perhaps this fortnight is a good time to have conversations over your dinner table about how your family can live out justice and how you may be able to show compassion and mercy? Maybe you could help out a local charity, perhaps get involved in CareVan? Maybe you’d like to live out environmental justice and clean up your local park or the riverway? Maybe you’d like to get to know more about where your food comes from and have a conversation about how you might live out justice through what you eat and what you spend money on?
Shalom,
Darren Wright
