Ways we serve our friends

Through service we show love. The love we show might be toward another person or another thing such as the planet. I’ve been noticing students around school who show love through service.

Serving our friends

In the attached video (and the previous week’s video), Ms Hamblin challenges students to notice the things they DO that demonstrate friendship and the things others do that demonstrate friendship.

On the playground this week, I saw some extraordinary service during Kindergarten recess.

During break time, a girl was swinging on the bars. She lost her balance and ended up face-planting her nose onto one of the bars. Understandably shaken, she sat on a bench for awhile to recover. A few students checked in to make sure the girl was alright. One friend in particular thought that water might make her friend feel better. She went to get the hurting girl’s water bottle, a gesture that offered some refreshment until the hurt subsided.

Serving others, some of whom may be friends (but not all!)

Also in this week’s video you will notice Miranda and Laicee in year 3 speaking about the environment. Our conversation about the environment began when they asked to start a service club that picks up rubbish. Not only did they worry about the appearance of the school, they wanted to do something to help ensure the animals are safe.

Their idea of picking up rubbish was beautiful. Also, it started us talking about ways they could service by making a public service announcement encouraging students to do the right thing with their rubbish so that there is less of a need for a ‘rubbish pick-up’ club.

Serving (hopefully!) future friends

We are grateful to the P&F for the service they are doing to help build community. If you haven’t yet bought your tickets to the Parents’ Cocktail Party, there is still time. The goal is to offer parents an opportunity to connect so that we can support one another in the hardest-and-most-rewarding job in the world – parenting!

Watch this space in the coming weeks to learn about their plans to host a Father’s Day Stall. After the Cocktail Party later this month, executive members of the P&F may ask if you can help with particular parts of our Spring Festival on 12 November.

Service Builds Community

Whether it is reaching out to a friend in need, trying to affect change in the world or simply putting up a hand to help, our service to one another is the foundation of our strong community here at Lutheran School.

Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Beanie and Chocolate Day

Beanie and Chocolate day is on Friday, 19th August. On this day we are asking all students to please wear a beanie with your normal school uniform. Please bring a gold coin donation. We will be raising money for Ronald McDonald House, Wagga Wagga. For all the people who are not sure what Ronald McDonald house is, it is an organisation for people who live in a small town and their child needs to go to hospital and stay there. Their parents can stay in Ronald McDonald House so that they can be close to their child. The chocolate treats that we will be selling at the canteen will be chocolate crackles, muffins, chocolate treats and much more. Please bring loose change up to about $3.

Thank you,

School Captain & Vice Captain (Clara and Caitlin)

Sacrificial service

Sacrificial Service

Have you seen the news talking about flooding over the last few weeks and the recent floods along the Murrumbidgee River? Or do you remember back to summer and the fires, the work our RFS brigades did to keep many properties and people safe? All the work these organisations do is a service to the local communities. The SES help with flood, storms and they provide assistance during summer to the RFS when required. The RFS provide a service in fighting fires, assisting in vehicle crashes, and helping with floods as well. There are many other services both of these groups provide in many communities that I haven’t named here. But there is one thing all of this has in common: it requires sacrificial service.

The members of these emergency services sacrifice time in many ways: time with family, friends, and time at work, not to mention other personal sacrifices that are made to serve the local community where they live. My point is that service in this case requires sacrifice. These people go into places where people have been evacuated, putting their safety last so that they can put others first. We hear of this kind of talk in the bible too, so it’s not that strange to hear. In the book of Luke, Jesus says the following:

But don’t be like [kings and rulers who order people around]. The most important one of you should be like the least important, and your leader should be like a servant. Who do people think is the greatest, a person who is served or one who serves? Isn’t it the one who is served? But I (Jesus) have been with you as a servant.

Jesus is talking about servant leadership and leading by being last and putting others first. So I really could ask this question a different way using our emergency services: Who do you think is greater, those who are served by the SES and RFS or those sacrificing time and family to serve?

As we see people serving our community, I would like to remind you that Jesus has served you in a way that you can never repay. He served you by putting your life and relationship with God first, while he put himself and his safety last. he did this by dying on the cross so that you could know what true sacrificial service is.

Netball NSW Schools Cup – Final
Monday 8th August our Years 5 and 6 netball team attended the final of the Schools Cup for the Riverina.

The girls committed to some excellent gameplay and defeated all the teams in the pool games.

We played the grand final against Trinity Anglican College from Albury. We went goal for goal most of the first half and then Trinity ended up defeating us by 4 goals. The girls were extremely competitive and didn’t give up the whole game.

The team consisting of Poppy Gaynor, Annabel Hannaford, Tessa Stoll, Abigail Toohey, Victoria Palmer, Pippen Cook, Jessica Bruce, Caitlin Oakley, Summer Battenally and Sophia Gooden were amazing to coach and played displaying great sportsmanship.

Thank you to the parents and grandparents for coming to support us throughout the day.

Our Athletics team performed extremely well, placing second behind Trinity Anglican College. Congratulations to our Age Champions, the students who broke new records and those who qualified for the CIS Athletics Championships. Everyone should be super proud of their achievements.

Thank you to the parents and grandparents who travelled to Albury and the staff who assisted on the day. Your support was greatly appreciated.

OSHC

This week at OSHC we have started writing riddles on the blackboard to spark in-depth thinking.  The children have been remarkably good at the puzzles and riddles we have put out.

As we move through the term the children at before school care are becoming more involved with setting up for after school care activities on the tables, this helps them feel more responsible for OSHC and they have some ownership of the activity choices.

The fidget toys and colouring in have been very popular along with the book corner. We are always looking to add to our bookshelf so if you child has any favorite books please get them to write it into our ‘Child Suggestion’ book so we can add it to our collection.

As we progress through the term, please keep an eye out for the Spring Vacation Care program that will be available next week. We have some fantastic activities planned and we do not want you to miss out. Bookings will open on Monday 15th August.

We look forward to another wonderful week.
